Toss Bouquet: Pros + Cons | Wedding Planning Tips

Toss Bouquet

Should I have a toss bouquet?  I get this question quite a bit as an East Lansing florist. Mostly because it’s something we offer complimentary with the extra flowers we have leftover after making bridal bouquets, centerpieces, etc. and everyone loves free stuff! Right?

I usually get one of three reactions when I ask my couple’s whether they would like a toss bouquet added to their order:

1. Nope.

2. Aren’t we supposed to? Spoiler alert: it’s YOUR wedding, do whatever you want!

3. I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it, should we?

I’m here to tell you the easiest way to decide if you’d like to incorporate this tradition into your big day:

Think about how many single guests will be at the wedding, who will also willingly participate when the DJ calls them out to the dance floor.  You’ll need to decide on a crowd number you feel comfortable as your cutoff, but I would say you’d want to have at least 7 willing participants to not make any of your guests feel awkward. And that’s it. If you hit your decided cutoff, then do it, and if not (and you were undecided about doing it anyway), then don’t.

I do love these photos from an MSU Union Wedding, Kellogg Center Wedding, and Eagle Eye Wedding below from a few of our amazing former brides enjoying their bouquet toss.

With all that being said, I’m a huge proponent of it’s your wedding day, do what you want! Do you want to have uneven bridesmaid/groomsmen combos? Great! Do a bouquet toss when there isn’t going to be a garter toss? That is totally fine! Serve pizza for dinner? Can I come?  The only rule I think should be consistent with all weddings, and all events, in general, is to feed your guests first. A hungry guest is not a happy guest so as long as you do this, everything else is up to you!
